The Beginning- 1920
Eustis Gun Clubhouse 1920-1950
Eustis Gun Club traces its roots back to 1920 with the vision and efforts of Jim Livingston, who was instrumental in founding the club. Originally located off Golf Links Avenue Extension near the ball fields in Eustis, the range served as a vital hub for local shooting enthusiasts.
In its growing years, 1965, the civilian membership took on the responsibility of maintaining and improving what was then known as the Eustis Police Pistol Club. Recognizing the members' contributions, the club's name was changed to Eustis Gun Club to reflect its broader community involvement. The city of Eustis supported the club by leasing the property for just $1 per year, fostering a strong partnership that helped the club thrive.
The first meetings were held in the old Eustis jail. Prisoners in handcuffs paraded past the open doorway of the meeting room. The early EGC membership cards entitled the bearer to a free round of golf at the local Country Club due to the close proximity to the course on E. Court Drive and Golf Links Ave. The range was a small 2 to 3 acres consisting of a 50 yard berm accommodating 12 closely packed shooters, 4ft high silhouette berms and a short 100 yard berm. At this time the club usage consisted of only target pistol, black powder, and pellet gun.
On April 18, 1982 the range was temporarily closed by the City as some .45 bullets ricocheted off the ground over the berm and reported by officials to strike dirt about 3 feet from a man walking on E. Seminole Ave. This signaled the beginning of the end for EGC at this location.
One notable figure in the club’s history is Lloyd Quick, who dedicated countless hours to maintaining the range. In recognition of his contributions, a sign was installed at the original facility bearing the name "Lloyd Quick Range." Lloyd Quick’s legacy of service lives on, even after his passing in 2009 at the age of 81.
On June 6, 1986 "The Lloyd Quick Range" closed to all shooting with the exception of pellet shooting. The Lloyd Quick range was maintained and pellet gun matches continued until the present club property was purchased and the first berms built.
This rich history of community effort and dedication laid the foundation for what Eustis Gun Club has become today
The dedication of EGC members to securing a permanent home for their shooting range was unwavering. Despite securing $36,000 in funding at 11% interest—with manageable monthly payments, a five-year balloon, and no prepayment penalty—obtaining land proved to be an uphill battle.
In the summer of 1988, both Eustis and Mount Dora granted their approval, followed by Tavares in the fall. However, the journey was far from over. Zoning applications triggered delays, and political roadblocks from one or more of the three cities continuously challenged EGC’s efforts.
Undeterred, members pushed forward. An updated survey was completed on January 31, 1989, and after persistent efforts, the long-awaited deed was finally issued on May 19, 1990.
This hard-fought victory was a testament to the perseverance and dedication of EGC’s members, ensuring a lasting home for the range.
With land finally secured, EGC was ready to turn its vision into reality. In August 1990, there was hope that a military construction unit might assist in clearing and building berms for the new range. However, the onset of Desert Storm redirected their efforts elsewhere, leaving EGC to press forward on its own.
By December 1991, initial progress had been made, with brush cleared and a 100-yard berm constructed using soil from the existing 50-yard berm. Over the following months, additional berms were laid out, creating 25-, 50-, and 75-yard ranges, as well as an IPSC and plinking range.
In 1992, covers were installed over the 100- and 50-yard shooting stations, followed by concrete slabs the next year. Thanks to sound financial management, a dues increase in 1990, and generous donations, two of the mortgage notes were paid off by November 1992, with the final note cleared by May 1996.
Expansion continued steadily. The 50- and 100-yard ranges were completed first, followed by pocket berms in January 1997. In June 1998, the 200-meter range was finished, and land was cleared for the first trap range. By the end of that year, berms were built for the future town of Swampwater, and the Traphouse, shooting stations, and electrical setup were completed.
February 1999 brought further improvements with the addition of a concrete pad and cover for the 200-meter range. Later that year, preparations began for a second trap range, which was fully equipped for night shooting the following spring.
In January 2000, construction began on "Swampwater," a dedicated range storefront, which volunteers completed by February 2001. Around the same time, efforts to secure potable water began, requiring numerous permits, fees, and countless hours of volunteer labor. By June 15, 2001, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection granted final approval.
To protect these hard-earned improvements, a chain-link fence and gate were installed in June 2000 to deter vandalism and ensure the security of the range.

Through determination, strategic planning, and the tireless work of its members, EGC transformed its land into a premier shooting facility, ensuring a lasting legacy for future generations.
